A critically important determinant of success in your internet marketing is your ability to get your site listed among the top search term results that relate to your business. Search engine marketing firms can assist you with getting your business web site to appear at the top of the free, “organic” results when someone searches for key words that relate to your business on a major search engine.
Search engine marketing firms use a variety of techniques. At one extreme, they find ways to trick search engines into finding your site; these methods are called “black hat” techniques. A search engine, for example Google, prospers or dies based upon it’s ability to provide useful results to the public who use it to find information.
So how does a search engine determine the top listings out of millions of competing web pages? Essentially by consensus votes of the websites that make up the web. In internet marketing a vote is cast by a link pointing at your website page. The more links you have pointed at that page, the better the reputation of the page linking to you, and the more relevant the link term, the higher you will get a page listed in the search engines. The primary objective of a search engine marketing firm is to get your web site rated as high as possible when someone searches for your business on a major search engine. Some firms offer consulting services only, while others actually do the work and don’t make you do anything. The cost can be moderate for consulting services to very expensive for full-service firms. Search engine placement efforts must be continuously maintained. Merely paying for a one-shot effort will not give long-lasting results.
